Week Twelve - Mixed Media
Mixed media (the use of two or more forms of media on a single work) is a wonderful technique used by some of the best illustrators in the field to create pleasing, eye-catching and dramatic artwork.
This week’s challenge was to have the students create a school of fish using mixed media. The media could be paints, markers, colored pencils, or colored paper.
Normally, I try to give students the freedom to draw or paint what they want. But this time, I wanted them to focus on composition, what media they wanted to use, and how they were going to use it. (Besides, I think parents need a break from more Pikachu and rainbow unicorns).
There's lots I love about Ayla's (1st Grade) piece: a wide palette, shape and size variation, and her use of the media.
I love that Rylee (3rd Grade) really pushed her comfort zone with this work. She normally draws very small and shies away from color - the complete opposite of this piece.
Dylan (1st Grade) took a unique approach by cutting his fish out in blocks rather than by the outline of the fish itself. I like it for being so original and it works visually.
