Week Ten - Making Maps
This week the students were asked to build their own maps using their imagination. They could choose from a busy city, a space base, a creepy castle, a magic forest, or an amusement park. Anything that was big and had lots of details.
The goal was to give enough structure and direction so they weren’t paralyzed with indecision but enough freedom to personalize the world they were creating. The map-making was more of a fun, open-ended exercise rather than a formal lesson.
I had hoped for more diversity, but they nevertheless did a good job with what they had chosen.
Ayla (Grade 1) chose to make her dream castle (home) and mapped the various rooms she'd like to have. I love how she added an element of mystery with the shiny green gem hovering above the roof.
Arden (Kindergarten) meticulously colored and chose her palette to match the spooky vibe she was trying to convey.
Dylan (Grade 1) did fantastic job following directions by adding lots of details in his map. So many elements in his work keeps the viewer engaged.
Chloe (Grade 1) did a great job adding lots of details and color in her piece.
Initially, Celine's (Kindergarten) map didn't look quite as full. But each time she brought it to me for review, I asked her to keep adding features which she did to wonderful effect.
