Week Thirteen - Zines
A zine is a small booklet made out of single piece of paper. A zine can be anything the maker can think of - a story, poems, music, recipes, magic spells, pictures, anything they can dream of.
I asked the students to decide on a story type (i.e. adventure, mystery, non-fiction), craft a story, design a layout and execute. This was a tall order, but I’m happy to see all of them jump at the opportunity.
This being the season of giving, I also asked them to make their first zine for someone else - a family member, a friend, a teacher etc.
Dylan and Chloe (1st Grade) both chose to do mysteries. I was impressed by how quickly to managed to whip up a story and jot down their ideas.
Curiously, Maverick (1st Grade) - ever true to his name - went with a Halloween-themed story. His "zombie" characters were actually cute. Rylee (3rd Grade) showed a lot of polish with her zine. It would not surprise me to see it on a Barnes & Noble bookshelf one day.
Ayla (1st Grade) had trouble deciding on a story. Ever the good friend, she spent a good amount of time admiring her classmate's work. Still, she somehow managed to create an adorable work that drew equal "oohs and ahhs" from friends.
